Product Description

The Kilree (Kil means church) Cross is a 9 foot tall sandstone cross, which stands in a field to the west of the ruined church and Round tower of Kilree. The spiral symbolizes the image of life and death, the image of everything rhythmical or the interconnectedness of all things, of becoming and passing away. A spiral moving to the right is the path of life or growth (spring) and one moving to the left is the path of decline or death (winter). The spirals and bosses on this cross represent the astronomical concept of the year. The central boss represents God with all things revolving around Him. The bottom boss without a spiral around it is the bare winter sun. The boss to the left spiraling to the right represents the spring sun unfolding in spirals. The top boss is the summer sun, expanding powerfully in the spiral and surging upwards. The right boss with its spiral moving to the left represents the Autumnal equinox.
