Cat with Robe Brooch, Peabody Essex Museum
Asian Collection - This graceful cat, disguised as a woman, is adapted from a carved wood netsuke. The traditional Japanese kimono lacked pockets. Netsuke (toggles) were devised as a means to hang pouches enabling the wearer to carry personal items. The original netsuke is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
