Product Description

Northumberland was an ancient kingdom which covered the area of southern Scotland and northern England. In 656 the Christian king of Northumbria, Oswy founded Whitby Abbey, as an act of thanksgiving, after he had defeated Penda, the pagan king of Mercia. In 664 the Synod of Whitby , King Oswy ruled that his kingdom would calculate Easter and observe the monastic tonsure according to the customs of Rome, rather than the customs practiced by Iona. The “Ionan" practice was that of the Irish monks who resided in a monastery on the isle of Iona, whereas the “Roman" tradition kept observances according to the customs of Rome. The art of the kingdom was highly influenced by the church in Ireland and that of the Mediterranean. This cross shows their highly developed art form.
