Product Description

The Rock of Cashel is an impressive collection of medieval buildings, chapels, dormitories, a round tower and a large imposing Gothic Cathedral – all on a high natural rock outcropping. The Rock was always a place of importance. Early history indicates it was the seat and symbol of the overkingship of Munster and inauguration of its kings. The origins of the Rock as a center of power go back to about the 4th or 5th centuries. One legend tells of St. Patrick baptizing the king of Muster. The saint's sharp pointed crozier pierced the foot of Oengus MacNad Froich, who believing it to be part of the ceremony, suffered in silence. The central design of the cross is found on several large 16th century grave slabs that were laid into the floor of the cathedral. The surviving cathedral was probably constructed during the 13th century.
