Shards are castings of safely demand bombs, reduced to bits of shrapnel, transformed into luminous keepsakes.
Made from Vietnam War bombs and other scrap by farmer-artisans in Laos, our Bomb Jewelry helps clear unexploded bombs to make their land safe to inhabit and farm. The simplest bracelet clears 3 square meters.
Our Bomb Jewelry is a universal story of transformation from the bad into the beautiful. Over 9 years, 250 million US bombs were dropped on Laos. 80 million failed to detonate. This jewelry tells the story of the legacy of war and turns fashion into impact. As of 2014, the story behind this jewelry was shared in 39 countries and helped clear more than 65,000 square meters of bomb-littered land. This jewelrys soul lives in Laos where the first ingenious farmer-artisans developed their method of transforming war scrap into spoons in the 1970s. Today, 15 families earn supplementary income working from earthen kilns behind their homes making meaningful jewelry that helps them recover their land, critical for a population of which 80% are farmers.
