Product Description

From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection. Fulgar is Latin meaning "thunderbolt". Fulgurites are natural hollow glass tubes formed in sandy soil by lightning strikes. Lightning hits with speeds up to 140,000 MPH and temperatures in excess of 54,000 degrees F, that produce up to 300 million volts of energy! This strike instantaneously melts the sand around its conductive surface fusing the grains together. The colled product is this Fulgurite tube. Fulgurites can penetrate the earth as far as 50 below the surface. The longest Fulgurite is approximately 16 feet long as was found in northern Florida.
