Product Description

From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection, this Meteorite is from Campo Del Cielo meteorites, which means Field of the Sky. In 1576, the governor of a province in Northern Argentina commissioned the military to search for a huge mass of iron, which he had heard that local populations used for their weapons. The expedition found a large mass of metal protruding out of the soil. The crater field is 12 miles long and 2 miles wide with at least 26 individual craters. Charred wood samples taken from beneath the meteorite carbon date the impact between 2,200 and 2,700 B.C. These meteorites hit the earths atmosphere traveling up to speeds of 150,000 miles per hour. The Campo Del Cielo meteorites are located in the Chaco providence of northern Argentina. The composition of this meteorite is 93% Iron, 6% Nickel, .05% Cobalt, with trace amounts of Phosphorus, Iridium, Gallium and Germanium.
